Teltonika ATC700 Tracker

A general-purpose tracking device for the Karttahimmeli system used by VAPEPA (Volutary search and rescue organisation in Finland). The device is delivered pre-configured, with a five-year multi-operator pre-paid SIM card installed.

⚠️⚠️⚠️ The tracker firmware still has minor shortcomings ⚠️⚠️⚠️

Tracker production has only recently started. The tracker works very well, but the current firmware has three shortcomings that you need to consider. Otherwise, the SIM data will run out too early...

  1. ⚠️ The tracker turns on automatically when connected to charging!!

    • When the tracker light is blinking, it is on and sending locations. After connecting the charger, press and hold the power button for 7 seconds. The light will then begin pulsing and finally stay lit. Now the device is charging but not using data.
    • Do not leave the tracker connected to the charger after charging, because for example during a power outage or when starting a car it may turn on again.

  2. ⚠️ The tracker does not go to sleep when movement stops

    • The tracker always sends locations every 20 seconds and does not go to sleep like its predecessor. Remember to power it off when you are not using it.

  3. ⚠️ The tracker sends location points unnecessarily often.

    • Unneeded points are filtered out before showing them in Karttahimmeli, but unnecessary is unnecessary, meaning extra battery and data usage.

A firmware update that fixes all three issues is expected and will be downloaded to the tracker automatically later. I will announce this on Facebook and update the information here as well.

Delivery Contents

The delivery includes:

  • Teltonika ATC700 tracker pre-configured
  • A 5-year multi-operator SIM card installed in the device and prepaid.
    • Data usage on the SIM is limited to 500 MB. This amount is sufficient if the tracker is used year-round for 2-3 days per week.
    • The multi-operator SIM is prepaid and activated for five years when the device has been configured for Karttahimmeli and tested by the importer before shipping. We aim to keep inventory turnover fast, so the usable period should remain very close to full five years.

Note! A wall charger (USB-C charger) is not included in delivery.

Setup

To connect the tracker to Karttahimmeli, a separate order is required to activate the IMEI number. Include your VAPEPA operational group or organization in the order. Send your email order to teemu@pirkanmaanpelastuskoirat.fi

ATC700 tracker

For dog use, you will additionally need some kind of mounting system. It is best to place the tracker on the dog's back with the power button facing the sky to achieve the best possible positioning accuracy and network reception. A tracker hanging from a collar works poorly.

One option, Velcro strap mounting, is presented here. ⚠️ For a dog that dives into water, extra protection may be needed.

Usage

  1. Turn the device on by pressing the power button for 3 seconds.

    • The light flashes green, changes to turquoise, and then starts flashing green and turquoise alternately.

  2. Connect the tracker to a Karttahimmeli operation.

    • Enter the tracker's IMEI and your desired team ID, then press check status. After that, press connect to operation.

    • Note: The tracker control does not yet indicate whether the tracker is actually working. By checking status again, you will see battery status and number of satellites ONLY AFTER the tracker has found satellites. For this reason, it is recommended to power it on outdoors.

  3. Turning off the device

    • Press the power button for 7 seconds.
    • The indicator light starts pulsing in two colors and eventually turns off.

Performance

With the pre-release firmware version, the tracker battery life has been tested to be at least 8 hours. Freezing temperatures shorten operating time by about one hour.

Warranty and online sales return rights are different things

  • 14-day right to cancel the purchase (commonly called "right to return"): You can return an unused tracker within 14 days. In this case, you are responsible for shipping costs.
  • Warranty: Covers manufacturing defects and possible material defects that appear later.

Warranty

The manufacturer's warranty for manufacturing defects is 2 years. The battery has a limited 6-month warranty.
