Tracker Control

Karttahimmeli can be connected to a separate tracker device that sends location data to the Karttahimmeli system when it is on. However, the location data must be directed to the correct operation. For this purpose, Karttahimmeli has a function in its settings called Tracker Control.

The tracker is linked to an operation based on the tracker's fixed IMEI number. The tracker is given its own "patrol ID," making it appear on the map as an independent marker.

The same device can simultaneously control multiple trackers as long as you change the IMEI number and link the trackers one by one to the operation. When the tracking need ends, you can simply turn off the tracker and let the connection expire as described below.

Note

The tracker control window does not indicate anything about the tracker's operation. The connection can be made even if the device is charging at home.

The check status button shows the device's status without linking it to an operation, but only after the device has found satellites.

With the latest settings (updated 9.11.2024), the device's status will be visible even before finding satellites.

Linking the Tracker to an Operation

  1. Ensure that Karttahimmeli is connected to the correct operation.
  2. Turn on the tracker and place the tracker with the blue button facing the sky in a location with an unobstructed view of the sky as much as possible.
  3. Let the tracker sit still and search for satellites for a few minutes.
  4. Scan the QR code containing the IMEI from the bottom of the tracker and copy the code into the "Tracker IMEI" text field.
  5. Give the tracker a new patrol ID. Do not use the same ID for both the phone and the tracker, as this will merge the routes.
  6. Press the check status button. This checks if you have the right to control the tracker with this device.
  7. Press link to operation.
  8. If you wish, you can release control, allowing the patrol ID to be changed on another device as well.

Ending the Tracking

  1. You can end the tracking either by
    1. First pressing the check status button and then pressing the stop tracking button.
    2. Turning off the tracker.

What does releasing the tracker mean?

The connection to the operation is made for 12 hours. After linking, the tracker is reserved for the control of the linking Karttahimmeli device for 18 hours.

Only the linking device can change the tracker's operation or ID during this time. Another user cannot "steal" the tracker for another operation. However, you can release control if you wish, allowing others to change the operation as well.

Note! Do not clear the browser cache or make the reservation in incognito mode, as you will lose control and have to wait 18 hours before control is possible again.

If the trackers are shared, please ensure that you release the control of each IMEI you use after use, so the next user can link the devices to a new operation.

Tracker Control

Please do not reuse operations (for too long)!

The tracker sends locations somewhat more frequently than a phone. As a result, the route tail reserved for the operation's patrol will fill up in a couple of days. After this, the tracker will be blacklisted, and the location will no longer be visible on the map.

Therefore, it is not advisable to use the same operation name in Karttahimmeli week after week; instead, it is better to come up with a new one from time to time. Or at least change the patrol name to a new one often enough.
