Installing the Application or Using the Web Version¶
You can use Karttahimmeli either with a web browser or with an iPhone or Android application. The map functions and user interface are the same in all usage methods.
Only the app can continue sharing location in the background when the screen is off! The app also consumes less power than the browser version.
Web Browser Usage¶
The web version of Karttahimmeli can be found at https://karttahimmeli.netlify.app/.
The web version can be used with any browser.
When using location sharing with a browser, it is recommended to start the application and wait until the location accuracy is good enough to send the location. Only after this should you connect to the lead, as the data connection may not work at all during the call, and the location will not update.
Android Application¶
It is recommended to download the Android application on an Android phone or tablet.
On an Android phone, power-saving features should be turned off, as they often prevent the use of location in the background for more than a few minutes.
Often, on Android phones, location accuracy starts to deteriorate when the battery charge drops below, for example, 15%. Therefore, it is advisable to connect a power bank in time to prevent the location from wandering on the map.
iPhone Application¶
It is recommended to download the iPhone application on an iPhone or tablet.
Adding the Application to the Home Screen¶
When using a phone, the recommended way is to install the application, but IF you do not want to install the phone application, Karttahimmeli can also be added to the home screen or home screen on the phone (The application is a so-called web app, or Progressive Web App, PWA), which makes loading maps into the cache work better than just in the browser, and using Karttahimmeli alongside other programs is easier.
Adding to the home screen means that the Karttahimmeli website is installed as its own application icon. The application is still a web page, but returning to Karttahimmeli is slightly more convenient when the page appears as its own application among the running applications.
You can add the application to the home screen as follows: iPhone: Share - add to home screen Android Chrome: Menu - add to home screen Chromepad: Click Install or Add to home screen from the menu on the right side of the address bar
Navigation in the User Guide¶
At the bottom right of the page, there is a link to move to the next page. The table of contents of the user guide can be found either in the sidebar or on a small screen through the "hamburger menu" .
Also, try the search function if you are already familiar with the usage.
