Using the Tracker in Karttahimmeli¶
The dog tracker sends location data to the Karttahimmeli system when it is on. However, the location data must be directed to the correct operation. For this purpose, there is a specific function in the Karttahimmeli settings.
See instructions for tracker control here
Note!
The tracker configuration is not intended for the dog's "instrument flight," but for documentation and post-analysis. Of course, the tracker shows how far the dog is, for example, but it is not completely real-time due to data transmission every 20 seconds and occasionally intermittent mobile networks. Even if the network is intermittent, all locations will be reliably delivered once the network is found again.
Charging, Powering On, and the Blue Button¶
Powering On¶
- Turn on the device by pressing the small white button on the side for three seconds.
- The button lights up green, and the device buzzes.
- The button starts flashing red every second. The device is searching for satellites.
- After a while, the button light turns off completely.
- About 30 seconds after finding the satellites, the first location is sent to the map.
When operating normally, the light flashes green once a minute.
You can check if the device is on by briefly pressing the power button. If the device is on, the power button lights up blue when pressed.
Low Battery?¶
When the battery level is below 10%, the power button flashes red three times rapidly.
The tracker's battery lasts about 5-6 hours of continuous use at walking speed. Since locations are sent partly based on movement, the battery drains faster when moving quickly, such as in a car.
You can also check the battery level from the tracker control, as long as the device has determined its location. Clicking the location dot on the map also shows the battery level.
Charging the Battery¶
-
Connect the charging cable to any USB power source and the other end to the tracker. Note that when connected to a computer's USB port, the tracker automatically turns on and does not turn off when the cable is disconnected!
-
Charging starts shortly after connecting the cable.
- The device flashes green twice in a row every two seconds when charging.
- When the battery is full, the green light stays on continuously . Charging is quite fast, about 1.5 hours to full.
The device's battery seems to drain about 10-15 percentage points per month, even when the device is off. It is advisable to fully charge the battery once a month.
The charging cable head is magnetic. Be careful not to let it attach to anything metallic in the car when disconnected, as it may cause a short circuit!
Turning Off the Device¶
- Press and hold the white button on the side for 5 seconds until the button turns red and the device buzzes.
Blue Button¶
Pressing the blue button while the device is on makes it buzz and saves a miscellaneous mark on the operation map.
Instructions for Using the Attachment Pouch¶
-
Insert the tracker into the pouch with the blue tag facing outwards.
-
Attach the pouch to a harness or similar, preferably on top of the dog, to ensure the best possible GPS satellite signal reception, resulting in the highest possible tracking accuracy. Also, location transmissions to the GSM network work better when the tracker is on top of the dog. If there is no suitable attachment point on top of the dog (or reservist), a collar will suffice in an emergency.
- Avoid getting the Velcro straps dirty. Always align the Velcro surfaces precisely, even when storing, to prevent hair and other debris from damaging the straps.
- The device is waterproof, so there is no need to worry about getting wet, but it is still advisable to dry the pouch separately after use.
- Remember to charge the device after each use. The next use might be in an emergency at 4:00 AM!
